I wrote the majority of this record in 2 weeks. 3 weeks later I was in Rhinebeck with my friend and producer Paul Antonell where we decided that we’d cut this record much like the last one – every song off the floor with live vocals and limiting ourselves to only 3 takes. In every case on this new album [and incidentally, Neil, true to your belief that the first take is always the best...] the tracks that made the record were and are the first takes – without exception!
You’ll hear vocals leaking into the acoustic guitar tracks and vice-versa. You’ll hear me miss words. You’ll hear mistakes. Mostly, you’ll hear an unusually honest record, with all its human flaws and hopefully you’ll love it anyway. The musicians are my friends. They played from their hearts and they were forced to play without thinking too much because they didn’t get much time with the songs. Gary Burke is my favourite drummer in the world, Jimmy Weider slays me with every note, Dan Goodwin’s bass lines are both hypnotic and melodic and Jason Crosby’s instincts on keyboards are nothing short of chilling. When you listen, remember that these are first takes – honestly, it’s all I could do to keep up!
That’s about it – the songs are from my heart and the rest is yours!
